"Labyrinths for Peace 2000" Exhibit Unpacking, Hanging, Packing Instructions
Gentle handling of the exhibit will enable other communities to benefit from this beautiful display of labyrinth photos. If you need information on any aspect of unpacking, mounting or packing this exhibit, please contact us.
Preparation: Three People will be needed to unpack and hang the exhibit. Clean the exhibit space and the area where the shipment will be opened. Have necessary tools and equipment available.
Tools & Equipment:
- Sheet, blanket or plastic to provide a clean area for packing and unpacking
- Cordless drill with Phillips screwdriver bit for opening crate
- Small box for storing screws
- Scissors and/or utility knife for cutting tape on plastic wrapping
- Tape measure
- White gloves for handling the panels
- Level
- Clear packing tape for re-wrapping panels before packing
- Hammer for hanging panels
- Double-sided tape and text to be added
- Picture hangers
- Plastic for re-wrapping panels (may not be needed – your call)
- Note: the panels have been wired for hanging, however, additional picture wire may be necessary
Unpacking:
- Clear unpacking area
- Unscrew both sides of the crate
- Push interior cartons from crate with shoulder (push hard)
- With carton standing upright, cut tape between top and bottom parts of carton
- Lift top off carton
- Remove panels
- Unwrap panels and save all plastic and cardboard packing materials
Considerations: Direct sunlight may fade and damage the pieces. A display area lighted with a south window would not be appropriate.
The panels are very light and can be rested on easels. It will take two easels for the large panels and one easel for the smaller panels. If you use easels, please insure that they are out of the way of traffic and won't be kicked over by a passing viewer.
The surfaces are unprotected so care should be taken to make sure there is enough space in between the pieces and traffic so that they can be view but not bumped. Hallways may not be appropriate display areas. Stanchions and ropes might provide a protective barrier if necessary.
Hanging the Exhibit:
- Use gloves while handling the pieces so that the exhibit
panels do not collect oil from your hands
- Determine the height at which you will hang the exhibit.
- Use a tape measure running from the floor to the bottom of the frame to make your measurements. A third person can "eye" the evenness of the pieces and/or you can use a level on tope of the frame to align it.
- An effective way to display the panels is to place them on tables and prop them up against a wall (narrow tables are best)
Packing the Exhibit:
- Examine and note any damage
- Remove panels from wall
- Wrap in plastic and tape
- Take the first carton and stand it upright
- Place two small panels and one large panel between each cardboard divider -- make sure the panels are back to back and no wires are against the art
- Stuff paper into the open areas of the carton
- Place cover over the end of the carton and tape
- Repeat with second carton
- Slide cartons into the crate -- it is easiest to do this by sliding both cartons in at the same time, inching them forward one by one and wiggling them a bit.
- Replace side panels with screws
