Designing and Building Permanent Labyrinths: A Hands-on Collaborative Experience with Lisa Gidlow Moriarty and Stephen Shibley
Participants will work with master labyrinth builders, Lisa Gidlow Moriarty and Stephen Shibley, to learn techniques and construct a permanent turf/paver labyrinth on the grounds of Pearlstone Center. Participants will explore installation considerations including establishing a location, various installation styles and techniques, materials, size, orientation, intended use, and have a hands-on experience in a permanent labyrinth installation.
Lisa and Stephen will describe their work in collaborating with staff at Pearlstone Center to identify the interest, location, materials, cost and pattern for a permanent labyrinth installation. On Wednesday evening, after initial introductions and a blessing of the space with Pearlstone staff, workshop participants will be introduced to a variety of labyrinth installation techniques and considerations necessary to engage in a permanent installation project. All day on Thursday, participants will be led in the construction of a permanent approximate 40 foot labyrinth on the retreat center grounds.
Tools and materials will be provided for digging trenches in the earth and embedding pavers to create the lines or walls of the labyrinth. A variety of tasks include moving and placing pavers, measuring, laying, digging, backfilling, sod removal. Some tasks involve working while kneeling. Participants may choose to vary their tasks depending on their skill level.
Once completed, the labyrinth will be available for walking by the group, use during the TLS Gathering and inclusion in ongoing programming at Pearlstone Center. Dedication of the labyrinth will include Pearlstone staff and will be incorporated into the opening ceremony for the 2019 TLS Gathering on Friday.
Workshop registration includes one night of group lodging in a cabin at Pearlstone, and Thursday meals prepared together. Participants should bring work gloves and appropriate clothing for working outdoors. The project will occur rain or shine.
