Labyrinth Walk Questionnaire (LWQ) Research Results and Implications: 2006-2018

Since 2006 the Labyrinth Walk Questionnaire (LWQ) has been available for use by labyrinth walkers to report the effects of their labyrinth-walking experiences on a variety of physical, emotional, and psychological variables. This presentation summarizes and interprets the responses to the questionnaire of nearly 1,000 respondents participating in numerous labyrinth events in many locations and under many conditions. It presents the most comprehensive report of the so-called “labyrinth effect” to date. In this non-intrusive instrument, participants are invited to complete the short questionnaire after concluding a labyrinth walk by responding to the stem statement, “Comparing how I felt before I walked the labyrinth with how I feel now, I feel: ….” (Participants respond to the statement by circling a number on a Likert Scale.) Other items allow respondents to list and rate additional variables that are relevant to their walk, list and rate environmental factors affecting their walk, and provide pertinent demographic information.

Using a three-question format (“What? So what? Now what?”), the presentation reports the results of the LWQ research, discusses why the results are important and relevant, presents caution for interpreting the data presented, and describes the implications of the research for future labyrinth research studies and initiatives. Participants will have opportunities to share their reactions to the research results and implications.
