Liminal Space through Sacred Design: An Artistic Exploration

90 Minute Workshop

Participants will learn how to design and color their own personal labyrinth mandalas while learning meditation techniques to embrace the space of not knowing; an essential aspect of our surrender to the mystery of this life, and our capacity to receive guidance when it appears.

Abstract

Through the course of our lives, we are all on a journey. We are in constant movement, even when we feel we may not have moved at all. Many of us fixate on where we were and how it could have been; or we are wonder how it could or should be, fearing, fretting or praying that it will meet our expectations. Indeed, the only moment we genuinely own, the present, is often overlooked in anxiety over the past or anticipation of the future.

Designing a personal labyrinth mandala is an opportunity to intentionally create a liminal state in which, by using a combination of sacred geometry, the pattern of a classic seven-circuit labyrinth, and simple meditation techniques, participants will see the infinite possibilities that reside in the space of not knowing. Participants create and color their own designs while learning how to effectively utilize the space of transition as a place to continue to create our identities.

Liminality is embraced by many cultures as a ritualized space for change and personal growth to take place. It is in this space of intentional transition that we are most capable of shaping ourselves through allowing our ideologies to dissolve and perceptions to evolve. Understanding multiple meanings exist and are constantly evolving and shifting in other people’s realities means that none of us is a fixed, locked, and clearly defined entity. Nor can we view any other person, place or situation in the same static way.
