Mini Session
For any writer, there are thresholds, liminal moments at which we hesitate, confronted by the unknown. Do we embrace such moments, hold back, or find new paths? This mini-presentation draws on times of profound recognition, and profound uncertainty, as writer and editor. With the labyrinth as metaphor for the writer’s inner journey, together we will explore and discover common ground.
Abstract
It’s easy to find other things to do, to hone our delaying tactics to perfection, when we’ve set aside time to write! Is that in part because of our response to liminal space? This session is time to explore the writers’ journey and our encounters with liminal thresholds, those moments of profound uncertainty and challenge as we step – over and over again – into the unknown. It’s about sharing our stories, celebrating and acknowledging liminal space at the heart of the writing process, with the image of the labyrinth as metaphor for our journey as writers.
Drawing on personal experience of editing and writing for publication – articles, chapters and a co-edited book – and with contributions from participants, the presenter will identify and discuss a series of liminal moments. Not all that is liminal is lovely… or is it? These examples each offer potential for transformation:
- Confrontation and opportunity: shall I seize the moment?
- Dealing with fear… sustaining the struggle
- Dealing with ego and lots more: should I do it?
- Hesitation and commitment: shifting visions
- Imagine it into existence.
- Meetings of minds: shared visions
- A writers’ retreat: stillness as a writer’s resource
- Wonder: did we do that?
- Seize, share, guide: joy in the editorial role
- Working towards maturity: steps on shifting ground.
Each inner encounter provides unexpected, or anticipated, reflection; each offers growth or challenge. Participants will be invited to identify, share and affirm their own experiences of liminal space as writers.
