The Healing Way Trail

This Poster presentation provides a comprehensive overview of a Drug & Alcohol Rehabilitation facility’s master plan for the redevelopment of a “Healing Way Trail”.  Not only does this master plan include a labyrinth but it takes healing and transformation beyond the “walls” of the labyrinth, across many thresholds, and into Liminal Space.

Abstract

This Poster presentation primarily focuses on the master planning work of an existing and proposed healing garden.  A Drug & Alcohol Rehabilitation facility has created an expansive outdoor meditative walking path centered on the use of Alcoholics Anonymous’ 12 Steps.  There are 12 stations, or “thresholds” in progression, where an addict can stop and reflect on each of the 12 Steps to recovery. This facility recently added a labyrinth to the open space and looks to redevelop the existing 12 stations into more reflective, healing and sacred spaces.  The labyrinth becomes integrated as one of the 12 Step stations, appropriately Step #3, whereby we are asked to “surrender to Spirit”.

The poster outlines project goals and objectives with associated programming design considerations.  A birds-eye view of the ½ mile long “Healing Way Trail” is laid out to illustrate the location of each of the 12 stations.  Each of the 12 Step principles are illuminated with an associated landscape theme.  Also illustrated is a fully designed and rendered station in plan view and an elevation detail to further capture the intent of the master planning work.

The content of this 36” x 48” poster is an easy-to-understand, comprehensive overview of a large-scale “healing garden” project to be used in an existing substance abuse program and facility.  The poster format lends itself to informal small group discussions around this year’s theme of embracing Liminal Space.
