90 Minute Workshop
Please join us to experience the DO’s and DON’T’s of creating a “living” labyrinth. We will walk through this process with you from research, to creation, through construction, into maintenance. Experience the beauty of nature within the peace-filled, restful and meditative setting of a labyrinth filled with flowers, birds, bees and butterflies.
Abstract
The goal of this workshop is to assist others who may be thinking of creating a “living” labyrinth in their sacred space. Our labyrinth has walking spaces separated by perennial flowers, which attract birds, bees and butterflies for three seasons of our growing cycle. At the end of their walk, folks are encouraged to sit on a bench to meditate, enjoy the flowers, bees and butterflies, and watch birds feed or drink from the birdbath at the entrance.
We learned from creating this labyrinth that a longer research period PRIOR to actually beginning construction would have saved us untold frustrations. Our hope is to share the highs and lows of our construction from beginning research to maintenance, and offer insightful suggestions to others wishing to create this type of labyrinth.
We will offer a picture account of the construction as well as outlining the various obstacles we faced during the 2-year construction cycle. An interactive lecture on the DO’s and DON’Ts of this type of labyrinth will be accompanied by time for questions and answers.
Our hope is to invite excitement about venturing into this type of labyrinth construction process. The end result can be really spectacular. The beauty of the flowers throughout the growing season, as well as the quiet, restful quality of winter offers people the peaceful and meditative space only a labyrinth can create.
