Harvest of Symbolism: Seeds of Inspiration in Spheres

Inspired by a stone sphere found in the Superstition Mountains of Arizona in 1933, ball labyrinths are a new seed of growth for labyrinth motifs. Adding tactile dimension to the historically flat designs, spherical labyrinths offer different perspectives for both historical and new patterns.

The majority of the workshop will be spent using a plaster blank to create your own spherical labyrinth. Workshop participants will examine how historic and original designs change when brought to life on spheres and share their reactions to them. Brainstorming usage, utility, and execution, participants will hone their perception and then design their own. After sharing their ideas and receiving feedback, participants will then complete and decorate their labyrinths, choosing from among a variety of tactile and visual materials such as string, sand, small rocks, wood bits, feathers, shells, seeds, dried flowers, inks, and paint. This workshop is primarily an art workshop, so plan to get messy. Extra materials fee $15.
