The Companion of the Labyrinth in Spiritual Direction

The purpose of the poster is to show how the labyrinth can be a companion in Spiritual Direction for both the Spiritual Director and those walking a spiritual path. Just like the seeds for the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius were created in the mid 1500s and continue today throughout the world, the labyrinth is an ancient design that is available worldwide which provides space for contemplation and reflection. Since 5400+ labyrinths exist worldwide, and a multitude of labyrinth resources are available on line, labyrinths are easily accessible and provide a wonderful addition to any spiritual practice (labyrinthlocator.com). Although the Spiritual Exercises were Catholic in their origin, today, people in various faith traditions around the world experience them. The historical context of the Exercises and the Labyrinth will serve as a foundation on which to build the importance of offering the labyrinth in conjunction with the Spiritual Exercises as well as in personal sessions with the Spiritual Director. Many research studies demonstrate the benefits of contemplation and reflection and journeying with a Spiritual Mentor, which are all parts of the Spiritual Exercises. Examples will be provided for ways to integrate the labyrinth with the Spiritual Exercises as well as ways that the labyrinth can be incorporated in our own spiritual practices. As we continue to move forward seeking a future of worldwide peace, using the labyrinth as a spiritual practice in this world of 24/7 distractions integrates an ancient tradition with our contemporary life journey.
