The Innate Bond Between the Classic Labyrinth and Nature

The primary focus of this presentation is the classic labyrinth as it embodies nature. Following introductions, the presenter will visit the historic presence of classic labyrinths in diverse locations and time periods and explore conjectured uses. The presentation will shift to the present-day reality of the classic labyrinth, considering its natural settings, interaction with its environment, use of building materials, and inexhaustible natural materials for its center, four cardinal directions, rituals, music, and activities. The presentation will explore the impact on walkers from this direct contact with the environment, including the internal nature of humans.

The presentation will include brief introductions of the participants; an initial lecture with graphics on the characteristics, locations, and uses of the classic labyrinth; hands-on learning to introduce and/or review the seed pattern evolving into three-, five-, seven- and more-circuit classic labyrinths; a group activity to introduce natural materials to build and embellish a classic labyrinth, including the center, the four directions, rituals, music, and the walkers; time to walk the labyrinth as a group; and reflection and question-and-answer time.

The participants will experience a small group within the larger Gathering; learn from the experiences of the presenter and attendees; draw an individual classic labyrinth from the seed pattern; create and walk a natural classic labyrinth as a group; reflect upon the shared experience; and experience an inclusive question-and-answer session.
